Proteins possessing a galactose-binding domain-like fold can be found in different protein families, in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. It is well-known that galactose-binding domain is composed of a beta-sandwich, in which the strands making up the sheets exhibit a jellyroll fold. The members of this family share a high degree of similarity in the beta-sandwich, despite an often low level of sequence similarity. The common function of galactose-binding domains is to bind with specific ligands, such as cell-surface-attached carbohydrate substrates for galactose oxidase and membrane-anchored ephrin for the Eph family of receptor tyrosine kinases. Additionally, the galactose-binding domain-like proteins are involved in carbohydrate metabolic process.
