SARS-CoV-2 has similar structural features to other coronaviruses. Coronavirus particles have four main structural proteins, namely membrane (M) protein, nucleocapsid (N) protein, spike (S) protein, and envelope (E) protein, and several accessory proteins. Non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs) displaying crucial viral proteins can be utilized to investigate the structural properties of natural viruses. Besides, VLPs do not contain any viral genetic material and have the potential to trigger a powerful immune response, offering a much safer option for vaccine development.
